  • This is Exercise?

    Ophra_at_Diana'sHappy Holidays, Friends!

Before I go pour myself into the Russian Baths to celebrate the first candle of Hanukkah, my Hebrew birthday, and the launch of the new website, I wanted to share with you one of the best exercise regimens I’ve found to date.

    It’s called Living with Ambiguity.

      • The strength training comes from the effort to live without needing to know or prove that you’re doing something the right way.
      • The flexibility from being able to perceive many right ways.
      • The agility from being open and ready to move into other possibilities.
      • And the speed from the swiftness with which you’re required to let go of dogmatic convictions.

I’ve been practicing this workout regularly for months and I am still a novice by all accounts, but I can assure you that it’s extremely potent training for the sport of living an authentic and meaningful life.

Here’s to lots of playful exercise and pleasurable challenges on our paths,

    Ophra

P.S. On the playful, pleasurable, authentic and meaningful tip, check out the upcoming Self Massage and Partner Stretching Immersions. Limited spots left in each, hope you can join us.

  • Giving Thanks via this Fancy New Website

When the future seemed bleak, I visited my ancient sisters in the Brooklyn Museum to ask for advice.
When the future seemed bleak, I visited my Ancient Egyptian sisters in the Brooklyn Museum to ask for advice.

There’s a good story behind how the new Force and Flow website came to life. Like any good story, it involves major challenges, failed attempts, and twilight musings on the meaning of life. Long story short, I managed to get through most of the road blocks and arrive at something I consider a personal success, thanks in large part to the special people who held me close and to my high regard for laughter as a form of exercise, therapy and play.

As for the meaning of life, all I could gather was that I understood far less than what I assumed I had all these years (imagine that!@$).

As a prelude, I spent two of my summer months working on content, traveling deep and far to bring you the essence of the work I’m doing. When the first website fell apart (read: lots of time and money lost and a few illusions dashed), I went back to what remained, i.e. the copy I had written, and was rewarded the amazing insight that what’s been propelling me all these years is above and beyond all things, love. Love for my grandmother, who passed away from cancer when I was only three years old, love for the many teachers and colleagues who have pushed and stretched and shaped me, and love for this human culture of ours, which with all of its blind spots and abuses, has given me this incredible life in which I can grow and change, challenge and be challenged, and see the material manifestation of my love in the things I build.

This website is one of those things, and I hope you can find time to enjoy it. There’s lots of space for you to contribute your own love, as well – I’ve created the Community page with the vision that the many people in my life with whom I share my passions can begin to intersect and benefit from one another. Whether you are an avid Yogi, a Reiki or bodywork practitioner, a dancer or an actor, there’s a page for you to pour yourself into.

    With love and gratitude,
    Ophra

PS – The website is young and needs your feedback to grow. Found a broken link? Confused by something? Please do let me know…

  • Urban Harvest

The city has always been incredibly fertile ground for me, and has taught me so much about growing and nurturing what feeds me. This morning’s harvest brought 10 butternut squashes, two radishes, a very ripe pepper and a massive sweet potato. What’s growing in your space these days?

  • New Year

It’s the evening of Labor Day and I’m drinking in the wind right now, which is finally dispersing the thick air, heavy with humidity and energy of over a million people at the West Indian Parade up the street from me. I love Brooklyn, for its diversity and sheer life-force, and I’m also grateful for the quiet of my studio.

I’m reflecting on my summer, which found me close to home on the challenging and thrilling journey of articulating what I do through language and image with the same kind of clarity, simplicity and attention that fuels my work. In many ways I’ve traveled farther than ever these past few months, skipping down unknown paths and jumping into cold waterfalls, literally and figuratively.

I started the journey in mid-May. Grand Jury duty in the first two weeks of the month shocked my senses (more…)
